This warm and comforting apple crisp is the perfect dessert for any season. With the tangy apples and the sweet, buttery topping, it’s an old-fashioned treat that pairs perfectly with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. This recipe uses a mix of green and Cosmic Crisp apples for a delicious balance of tart and sweet.
Ingredients:
For the Filling:
- 4 apples, peeled, cored, and chopped (I used 3 green apples and 1 Cosmic Crisp)
- 1 tablespoon of sugar
- Juice from 1 whole lemon
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon good-quality vanilla extract
For the Topping:
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup old-fashioned oats
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 2 sticks (1/2 pound) unsalted butter, diced
Instructions:
- Prepare the Filling:
In a large bowl, combine the chopped apples, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla. Stir until the apples are evenly coated. Let the mixture sit for 7-10 minutes, allowing the sugar to break down the apples and create a bit of juice.

2. Make the Topping:
In a separate bowl, combine the flour, oats, granulated sugar, and light brown sugar. Add the diced butter and use a pastry cutter or your hands to mix until the butter is incorporated and the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized butter pieces throughout.
3. Assemble the Crisp:
Pour the apple mixture into a greased 9×9-inch baking dish. Evenly spread the oat topping over the apples, ensuring it covers the filling completely.

4. Bake:
Place the dish in a preheated 350°F oven and bake for 1 hour, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
Enjoy!
Serve this delicious apple crisp warm with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for the perfect dessert. The combination of the sweet, crisp topping and the juicy apple filling is sure to be a hit at any gathering!
